Teaching Components

Silent Sitting

Silent sitting mentally and physically prepares the individual for learning. When we sit silently for a few minutes it heightens our sense of awareness and it allows the individual to tap into his or her inner resources. This increases their ability to learn, to create, and to sustain a sense of equanimity and well-being.

Warm Up & Cool Down

Choi Kwang Do warm up exercises prepares the body for physical activity and helps prevent injury to the individual by warming up the nervous, skeletal and muscular systems (known as the ‘Kinetic Chain’) of the body. Warming up psychologically prepares the individual for exercise.

Choi Kwang Do cool down exercises gives the body the opportunity to transition from physical exertion to a state of rest in a safe way.

Target Training

In order to develop an individual’s strength, power, speed, accuracy and endurance Choi Kwang Do students utilize several target training tools. These training tools are focus mitts, air shields,  free standing bags and ceiling hanging bags and are used as a form of resistance training to aid an individual’s physical and mental development alongside his/her self defence skills.

Group Activities

Group activities promote mutual respect and understanding of one anothers customs, cultures and traditions. Since we are all members of society we must learn how to live, study, work and play with one another in peace and in harmony. Group activities are an integral part of the programme as it teaches individuals how to trust, understand and respect one another.

Group activities also facilitate learning through practical experience and the lessons learnt are more likely to be absorbed and remembered.

Patterns

In Choi Kwang Do the word “Pattern” is used to define a predefined sequence of defensive and offensive movements. Patterns are the back bone of the Choi Kwang Do system. They are designed primarily to promote optimum health, development of skill and technique and challenge the brain. Choi Kwang Do patterns stimulate the ‘Kinetic Chain’ (nervous, muscular and skeletal system), which promotes brain growth and its optimum functioning by releasing a series of ‘neurochemicals’ and ‘growth factors’ which are instrumental in improved academic performance and higher brain functions (known as ‘Executive Function’ ).

Story Telling

Story telling provokes thought and stimulates the imagination. Stories of honorable deeds, inspirational accomplishments and eminent role models stimulate the individual’s visions of personal and social excellence.

Thank you for your feedback and eurgncaoement, Brian I could see you as the perfect teacher for those philanthropic experiences One thing you can do is invite other people into the conversation. The more people we have asking or demanding a better educational system, the more likely our voices will be heard! Spread the word!

Master Banfield Excellent stuff! I relaly relaly enjoyed what you had to say here. In an era of such unprecedented transition on so many levels, we need entrepreneurs of education strategy like you to keep pushing ideas like this.Looking back on my time at Liberty, I was that very shenanigan creator you described in classes like Algebra, though hopefully not too much in your class I do regret those shenanigans now, but I believe my lack of motivation was partially due to the broken system you so adequately describe. In my higher-level math classes, I could see no way the information I was being forced to ingest would ever be relevant to my life. Putting the power in student’s hands through the four options you describe (brilliant, btw!) does relinquish control and that is a scary thing, especially for parents I imagine, but I agree with you that it’s entirely necessary. After all, without the freedom to make their own choices, how can we expect students to be motivated? Also, the philanthropic experience option you mentioned literally made me say heck yes! out loud at my computer screen. Since leaving the church world, I’ve craved the sorts of powerful learning/life-forming experiences they offer, but without the indoctrination. The mission trip framework is indeed a fantastic avenue for self-discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed this, Master Banfield! Let me know how I can help push this entire system in any way. Thanks for writing!
